  Enrico Caruso
Enrico Caruso

Francois has a very eclectic taste in music from classical to pop music.  His father introduced him to music when he bought ‘Oh my Papa’ by Enrico Caruso when Francois was a small boy.  Francois still has ‘The Golden Voice of Enrico Caruso’ by ARC records from 1963 on vinyl, which he bought as a teenager.

Not surprisingly, Francois’s most favorite singer is Pavarotti.  He was lucky enough to see the ‘Three Tenors’ when they came to South Africa in 1999 and he had a great seat directly behind the President of South Africa at that time ‘Mr. Nelson Mandela’.

As a small boy and teenager, Francois’s school used to arrange trips to see the ‘Halle Orchestra’ conducted by Sir John Barbirolli and the whole atmosphere the sound of a full orchestra and the charm of Barbirolli patiently explaining the music made Francois fall in love with classical music.

He has always been a fan of musicals since he heard South Pacific by Rogers and Hamerstein and saw the movie.  He has the original vinyl with Ann Gordon, Frances Boyd, Jan de Silva, Rudy Cartier, Paul Hasa with The Broadway Theatre Orchestra and Chorus directed by Fritz Wallberg made in England.  Every time he is in England he always goes to the theatre and see a musical and in recent years the musicals of Andrew Lloyd Webber has been his favorites particularly ‘Phantom of the Opera.’

Of course as a teenager, being brought up in the 1960’s in Manchester with lots of night clubs he saw lots of bands such a the Beatles, Dave Clarke Five, Freddy and the Dreamers, he was greatyl influenced by thier sound and he he still loves most of that music.  But when he was about sixteen he heard an Otis Reading single and became interested in rhythm and blues.  Soon he was listening to ‘Carla Thomas, Booker T and MG’s, Sam and Dave, Eddie Floyd, Ben E. King, etc. and his king and queen of song became Otis Reading and Carla Thomas.  This is enshrined on their Stax Record recording in 1967 King & Queen, Otis Reading and Carla Thomas with an endorsement letter from Howard H Baker Jr., Tennessee from the United State Senate.  His taste later broadened to include Motown and he was soon listening to The Elgens, Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Martha and the Vandellas, the Marvelettes, The Miracles, The Supremes, The Temptations, Jr. Walker and the All Stars, Kim Weston, Steve Wonder, etc.  But it was not just the music, it was the synchronized dancing, style and dress all the artists brought to music, which attracted him and millions of other people.

When Francois was about twenty, he found a Nat King Cole album ‘Nat King Cole 20 Love Songs’ printed in Italy which blew him away.  He could not believe anyone could portray such feeling and controlled power in a voice it touched his soul when he sang ‘Unforgettable’.  Francois still has the vinyl today.

Francois was on a plane from Los Angeles to New York traveling first class and was seated in the central aisle which has two seats. Francois has always seen flying as a great opportunity to read and was busy reading when a stocky guy in a black tee shirt and jeans sat beside him.
The man struck up a conversation with him and talked about his visit to the UK where he had played a game on television called 'It's a Knockout' with Princess Ann.
Talked about a movie he was hoping to be cast in with Steve Martin and his music.  I had never heard of him of course but when I returned home and asked my children who somebody is called Meatloaf they quickly found the CD of 'Bat out of Hell' the largest selling album in history which sold 35,000,000 copies.  Ever since then although generally I don’t like this type of music I do like Meatloaf and “I’ll Do Anything for Love, But I Won’t Do That” is a firm favorite.

Do not think Francois is in a time warp and does not listen to modern singers because he does like Andrea Bocelli singing popular songs or opera, Witney Houston and Celine Dion and many others.  He also loved Mama Mia and Hairspray as musicals and no longer collects vinyl but CD’s.
