Football

Soccer is called football by the English, they invented the modern game so i suppose they have the right to name the sport. Francois became a supporter of Manchester United when he was about five, he can’t remember anything before that time.

Jack Rowley was then the centre forward and they won the league in the 1951-52 season.  Matt Busby started the ‘Busby Babes’ in the following season and the young players resonated a chord with every supporter.  Bobby Charlton, Duncan Edwards, Jackie Blanchflower, Bill Foukles, Dennis Voillet, Roger Byrne, Tommy Taylar and Johnny Berry were all introduced in the following season and they transformed the game with fast attacking football.

Having had very many successful years in 1958 Manchester United’s young team were destroyed in the Munich Air Disaster and Francois mourned his heroes as if they had been relatives.  The way Matt Busby rebuilt the side is legendary.

George Best

When Francois was a teenager in Manchester his interest in music and girls led him to visit many night clubs such as the 'Twisted Wheel' where many famous bands played. The apprentice's from the Manchester Uunited Academy of the day also went to the same clubs, so Francois got to know them on a nodding basis and often spoken to them. Amongst the group was a player called George Best, with whom Francois often exchanged a few words. Francois was always in awe of anyone who played football.  When George Best made his debut at 17 he was incredible, Francois watched in disbelief his balance, ball control, speed and strength, for such a small skinny guy he was immensely strong.  He was to Francois the best player in the world and he has never seen a better player since.  After George started playing for the first team Francois rarely saw George at his usual night clubs. But when Francois was seventeen when on leave from the army he saw him in a club sitting drinking talking to a pretty girl.  George did not recognize Francois as he had grown several inches and looked different. Francois was not offended and understood George had moved on in his life and needed time to relax, without being interrupted by the fans - Francois never ever talked to George again. It did not surprise Francois when later in life George died of kidney failure due to being an alcoholic.George would sit all night drinking then play football the following day brilliantly. But the continued abuse to his body had a toll and obviously it eventually led to his death. It was a very sad day to anyone who was a fan of football when George Best died.

Perhaps George's life can best be summorised in this quote from his book 'The Good, the Bad and the Bubbly' 1990 by George Best with Ross Benson.

"I spent a lot of my money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered"

At an event sponsored for businessmen by Barclays Bank. Francois met 'Tommy Docherty' who was manager of Manchester United from 1972 to 1977. Tommy was a fantastic speaker and after the event he talked informally with Francois and several others of his time at United, his sacking for the affair, his many clubs and the players he had managed. It was a fascinating insight into the life of a manager in the top flight, which later inspired Francois to write 'The Match' one of his unpublished novels.
